It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book. Having borrowed the book at the recommendation of a friend, I had no preconceptions. I started reading and wondered if it was a dreary book about life in a nursing facility. When my friend asked about returning the book, I ordered an audio version so that I would not have to admit I could not get interested in the story. I can almost always get through an audio book on my commutes to work. The book quickly became an engrossing story. I was cheering for the animals! The mal treatment some of them received was very hard listening. The one criticism I had, was Jacob’s naivete. Could he not figure out he was putting his friend’s, and his own life, in danger? I would have found him more attractive had he been more discerning. As it was, I would not have been surprised had Marlena really not been attracted to him. Also, I wondered if a talented circus performer such as Marlena was, would not have had to start very young instead of at the age of 17 when she left home and married August. The ending? for the circus it was terrific!! But for Jacob at 93… found it less than realistic!

I couldn’t be happier with this purchase! I am an avid reader who had lost her desire to read in the past few years because there never seemed to be enough time. Reading on the kindle is so convenient and fun I’m now reading more than ever! And thanks to the huge list of free classics, I’m re-reading all of the books I read in college. I’m also enjoying some new modern authors too. I take it everywhere and don’t know what I’d have done without it on our family camping trips this summer.

I bought two of these bikes for a non-profit organization that had only $400 allocated for two adult bikes. A pretty tough bill to fill, but when I saw this bike for $200 I thought it might be the answer.

The bikes were fairly easy to assemble once I figured out that the instructions were outdated. For example, it says to use a wrench to tighten bolts when putting on the front wheel — but there are no bolts for the front wheel. You have to figure out for yourself that there is a quick release mechanism hidden in a separate box with reflectors and other items.

While assembling I noticed that the front wheel on both bikes needed to be trued (straightened). Pretty sad for a brand new bikes. Because of this it was nearly impossible to properly adjust the breaks. The derailleurs (front and back on both bikes) also needed adjustment but the front derailleur on one bike was so out of whack it wouldn’t shift at all. Of course there were no instructions on how to adjust the front derailleur in the owners manual so I had to look it up online. I finally got it to the point it would shift but it still rubbed on the guard when using the middle sprocket. It looked as if the sprocket was not mounted squarely because it moved in and out as the crankshaft turned (both bikes were like this). You need a special tool to remove the crankshaft.

Another downer is that paint flaked off where the seat goes in as the metal expanded slightly to accept the seat post. This happened on both bikes. I hope the rest of the bike doesn’t start losing paint too.

After several hours trying to get gears and breaks properly adjusted I finally decided to take them to a local bike shop to get them tuned up for $60 each. The good news is the shop was able to get them in proper working order and the technician said they seem to be good bikes, especially when I told him what I paid. The morale of the story is, when buying a bike online, be sure to consider the cost of getting them tuned

Can’t say enough bad things about this bike.. I ride about 5 miles a day from home to school and back. Very flat, good weather, easy ride, and I’m not huge or anything. I figured a cheap bike like this would last a year, and then I’d upgrade. I’ve had Mongoose Montana Mens Mountain Bike a month, and there have been a number of problems.

In general, the parts are flimsy. The seat post clamp won’t prop up the seat. The handlebars are loose because the bolt that holds them comes loose. The bike feels like it’s off balance. Also, while making sharp turns, my toes scrape the front tire. Biggest problem – pedals made of really weak plastic that actually ripped. Drivetrain, shifters, and brakes OK so far, but I’m not expecting much.

Do NOT buy this bike if you expect to ride it on a daily basis. Spend 2X or 3X more and get better quality components.
